Friends of the Hester House

The Friends of the Hester House is an effort to organize and re-engage supporters. The program allows alumni and others to expand the Hester House's capacity to serve by volunteering or providing financial/in-kind resources. As a friend, you will reap even greater satisfaction knowing you are making a difference in the lives of kids who face daily temptation to deviate from the path to success. You will be making a difference by warding off the influence of devastating poverty that often confuses parents who are too often tempted with instant gratification rather than what is best for the family. Most of all, you will create opportunities for individuals to cross the line of poverty and become a Hester House alumni rather than just more statistical data representing the plight of the poor.

Alone, our effect is limited but together, we can make a difference. Please join our other friends to ensure that the good work of the Hester House continues. As a friend you will be listed on our website, our newsletters, other printed materials and be invited to attend an annual homecoming celebration. Please join in, fill out the donation card included in this packet. Make your pledge and mail it in today. If you prefer, you can make your pledge and a completely secure donation online. Youth Empowerment Services

The Hester House Youth Empowerment program serves youth ages 13 to 17 and strives to develop team/leadership skills and the importance of education . This age group is particularly vulnerable to negative role models, typical in urban enviornments. To survive, urban teens have to grow up too fast and engage in adult activities that many times detours normal social development. The program utilizes recreational and social activities to attract and retain the teens. The areas two high schools report near 50% dropout rates that in turn drives the Youth program to focus on school retention strategies. Activities include sports, drama and career development field trips Staff and volunteers mentor the youth while involving them in social and recreational activities. Building one-on-one relationships is imperative to the success of the program. Volunteer mentors with drama and coaching skills for both boys and girls are always in demand. Children Services

JCHH youth services consist of pre-school, after-school, teen and summer camp services. The program offers an education curriculum that allows children to establish a foundation supporting the expansion of their developmental and learning capacities. By offering a nurturing early childhood service, literacy and a tutoring based after-school and summer camp activities, children are given opportunities to engage in developmentally appropriate experiences. The Hester House is dedicated to the success of all children. A good education is imperative and must start early to overcome obstacles that poverty and/or unstable family life present. The programs seek to engage parents/guardians to strengthen their parenting skills, which in turn strengthens the family and community.

Services are available from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. NCI is accepted and subsidized daycare is available for those meeting requirements. For more information contact Ms. Mattie Stanfield, Child-Care Director, at 713.672.2573 ext.117 or email mstanfield@jchesterhouse.org

Senior Services

The Swinging Seniors of the Hester House are the pillars of the community. Currently over 100 seniors are enrolled in the program. They assemble each day, Monday through Friday and enjoy the fellowship of lifelong friends and extend a welcoming hand to seniors new to the area. They receive a complimentary hot lunch provided through the Area Agency on Aging and Neighborhood Centers, Inc. A typical day could include an exercise session, special presentations on health related subjects, arts and crafts, quilting, entertainment field trips and visiting other senior centers. Complimentary transportation is offered to and from the center. The hours are Monday-Friday 9:30am to 2:00pm. Volunteers interested in working with seniors are more than welcome to join the program. Volunteers can help with arts and crafts, serving lunch, leading exercise class and calling bingo. For more information please call 713-672-2573, Ext.107.

"I first encountered the Hester House my junior year of highschool. As part of a school field trip, a group of friends and I helped clean the gym (and played some pick up basketball). The summer before my senior year, however, I needed an activity to fill a four week lull and remembered the House. What was supposed to be just a one month endeavor is now pushing three years and I can't imagine my life without the people of the Hester House. Between rocking the one year olds to sleep, doing puzzles with the preschoolers, and playing cards with the swinging seniors, I have forged life long bonds with an entire community. One visit to the Hester House is enough to hook anyone. It's one of those rare places left full of nothing but love and compassion; the kind of place this world needs."

This week the Hester House begins efforts to become a Community of Respect. This innovative community-wide anti-bias initiative is based ont eh Anti-Defamation Leagues (ADLs) sucessful No Place for Hate® school program. More than 100 schools in ADLs Southwest Region have been recognized as No Place for Hate® after completing a series of ADL-approved anti-bias activities, signing a Resolution of Respect and creating a diversity task force.Under the umbrella of the Community of Respect® Collaborative, this free, customizable and results-driven program is now available to the larger community. Houston Mayor Bill White and Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace serve as Honorary Co-Chairs of the Collaborative, and are joined by a diverse group of business, community, religious, government and educational leaders, all of whom are committed to doing their part to ensure that we are, and always will be a Community of Respect®.
